The coat, like other garments in a modern person's wardrobe, has its origins in the distant past, when ingenious individuals discovered ways to shield themselves from cold, rain, and wind. Consequently, the predecessor of the contemporary coat can confidently be referred to as a cloak, as it was this attire that travelers preferred to don during long and arduous journeys, in an effort to safeguard themselves from inclement weather.
During the 16th-17th centuries, a primitive form of the modern coat emerged in Spain, known as the "palletoque". During that era, it served as a working-class garment worn by the less privileged segments of society. Subsequently, in France, the so-called paletot, an outerwear for the military, began to be stitched, while in Holland, the "palastrock" made its appearance and was exclusively reserved for the court nobility. In the 19th century, the coat underwent changes, with new styles being invented, often named after renowned aristocrats or political figures. For instance, a novel coat style known as the "raglan" emerged, named after British Field Marshal Raglan, who lost his arm in the Battle of Waterloo and requested tailors to design a sleeve to conceal this deformity. In the 20th century, the popularity of coats soared, with fashion houses continually showcasing them in their annual shows. For instance, in 1951, Italian designer Achille Maramotti unveiled his debut collection to the fashion world, consisting of a suit and two coats, marking the global genesis of the famed Max Mara brand.
