Balenciaga is a women's fashion brand that was established in 1914 by Cristóbal Balenciaga. The first store was opened in 1918 in San Sebastián, Spain, which is Cristóbal's hometown. Later, stores were also opened in Madrid and Barcelona. Members of the Spanish Royal Family were known to wear Balenciaga clothing. However, due to the Spanish Civil War, the stores were closed and Cristóbal relocated to Paris.
In 1937, Balenciaga Fashion House was established in Paris. The first collection consisted of remarkably feminine yet avant-garde outfits that caught the attention of the public. Even during World War II, loyal fans of the brand risked their lives to visit Paris and admire the masterpieces created by Cristóbal. Some of the iconic designs include the "square coat," pink dresses adorned with black lace, tunic dresses, shirt dresses, voluminous jackets, baby-doll dresses with elevated waists, and balloon skirts. The most iconic collection was the "Empire line," which featured silhouettes resembling Eastern kimonos. This represented a new form of femininity and became highly regarded in the fashion world during the 60s and 70s.
All the designers who worked at Balenciaga went on to achieve success with their own fashion brands, such as Oscar de la Renta, Emanuel Ungaro, André Courrèges, and Hervé Léger. However, in 1987, Cristóbal closed his Fashion House, and he passed away in 1972.
The Balenciaga brand was preserved until 1986 when it was acquired by Jacques Bogart. Michel Goma served as the designer until 1992, followed by Josephus Thimister. Later on, Nicolas Ghesquière, a disciple of Jean-Paul Gaultier, joined the company and became the creative director in 1997. This marked the beginning of the brand's popularization and the creation of outfits for celebrities. Ghesquière remained in this position until 2015. Currently, the Fashion House is owned by the company Kering, and Demna Gvasalia serves as the creative director.
