Vilebrequin is a French beach brand that was established in 1970 in Saint-Tropez. Fred Prysquel, a young journalist, was previously involved in covering Formula 1 races. However, he decided to shift his focus to fashion after being dissatisfied with the tight and uncomfortable men's swimwear that was popular along the French Riviera coast. Inspired by the surf shorts he saw in California, Fred introduced the first men's swim shorts under the brand Vilebrequin. He even cut them out of a tablecloth in one of the cafes in Saint-Tropez.
