Vilebrequin, a French beach brand established in 1970 in Saint-Tropez, was founded by Fred Prysquel, a young journalist. While covering a Formula 1 race, Fred noticed that men on the beach were wearing uncomfortable tight swimsuits. Inspired by loose surfer shorts from California, he decided to create comfortable and stylish swim trunks for men. He initially cut out the prototype of his shorts from a tablecloth at a beach café. Fred later found sailcloth cotton as a more suitable fabric, which quickly gained popularity and became a must-have for vacationers on the French Riviera. The brand name, Vilebrequin, was chosen spontaneously by Fred, reflecting his love for racing. In French, it means "crankshaft."
In 1995, the collection expanded to include children's shorts under the "Father and Son" family looks. The women's beachwear and accessories line was introduced in 2012. The brand was acquired by G-III Apparel in the same year, with Roland Herlory as the CEO and Richard René as the creative designer.
